The
Towns at Elba Island
It is situated at the slopes of Capanne mount, 350 m above
sea level. The plain, the hill, the mountain and the sea create
natural contrasts in the Island. In the centre of the village,
it is possible to visit the archaeological museum, the medieval
gates, the innumerable stairs, the fortress, built by the
inhabitants of Pisa, Appiani princes’ house with the foundry and
the mint, where money was coined, a small church with its
garden, San Niccolò church, "Casa Vada" and San Lorenzo church
in Romanesque style, which was destroyed by Turks in 1554.
