The
Towns at Elba Island
Portoferraio is today the most important harbour in the
Island. The centre still keeps its “country atmosphere” with its
picturesque old houses, its balconies with flowers, its alleys
and its little panoramic squares. Some monuments are important,
even if they have not a great artistic value: the parish church,
built for the Grand duke Cosimo I’s will; the town hall with its
rich library. The town of Medici with its fortresses: Forte
Falcone, Forte Stella and Torre della Linguinella. Near this
tower, it is possible to admire the ruins of a Roman villa and
an archaeological museum
